Bodies of two more Bulacan State University students were recovered Wednesday in Madlum river in Barangay Sibul, San Miguel, Bulacan bringing the death toll in the drowning incident to six.

(Update No. 2-12:32 p.m., Thursday, August 21) At around 7:35 a.m. on Thursday, August 21, the body of another Bulacan State University (BSU) student was retrieved in Barangay Sibul, San Miguel, Bulacan, near the Madlum River.

The student, identified as Maiko Bartolome, was part of the group of BSU students who were crossing the river from Madlum Cave when they were suddenly swept away by raging floodwaters on Tuesday (August 19).

Unfortunate group

Aside from Bartolome, six others perished in the incident.

The bodies of Mikhail Alcantara, Helena Marcelo, Sean Alejo, and Michelle Ann Rose Bonzo were recovered on Tuesday afternoon.

The bodies of Jeanette Rivera and Madel Navarro were recovered on Wednesday, at around 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.

Only two others-identified as Danielle Cunanan and Thea Hernandez-survived.

Sudden death

The Bulacan Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) said the flashfloods may have been triggered by the heavy downpour on Mt. Manalmon.

The BSU group had wanted to go up to Mt. Manalmon. However, the guides advised them not to proceed because the weather was bad. The group took the advice of the guides. In fact they were on their way back to their tour bus when they were overpowered by floodwaters.

Barangay captain Bogart Ligon lamented that the group didn’t get in touch with them for their outing. He said if they had done so then there may have been more tour guides on the scene who could have helped rescue them.

But tour guide Jeck Antonio said the floodwaters were simply too strong that even they themselves got swept away.

Due to the incident, the mayor of San Miguel town temporarily closed the tourist spot.
